FC Soccer Finishes Strong

FC fought hard to the final whistle as both seasons came to an end with both teams losing in the second round of playoff action.

Our Lady Academy 4   Lady Dawgs 0

Despite the game being a mere 1-0 at the half, the Lady Dawgs fell to a talented OLA squad 4-0. The 9 time State Champions from the semi private school didn't move on without a fight. The Lady Dawgs loss was hard fought and much closer than the score reflects. On this night, The Lady Dawgs played with OLA. "The game was actually back and forth for the first 60 mintues of play, and to be down only 1-0 at half showed a lot of determination on our girls' behalf. We proved to ourselves that we can play with them. We don't have the soccer resources that they have in their area but on this night, we actually gave them a soccer game."  OLA won 14-0 in 2012, and 7-0 in 2013.  FC is closing the gap. The Lady Dawgs finished 19-3-3 overall (6-0) in region play. All 3 losses coming to semi-private schools. "I would like our chances of advancing deep into the playoffs in an all public school playoff system. The parochial schools have a huge advantage. it isn't fair, but I'm extrmely proud of this team and the goals they acomplished this season. They worked hard and played with a lot of heart. They have nothing to be disapointed about." said Long.

Resurrection Catholic School wins 2-1 (4-2) in penalty kicks.

The Dawgs played one of their best games in recent memory. Despite leading 1-0 at the half, Resuurection tied things up, and won in a penalty kick shootout after two 10 min. overtime periods plus two 5 min. sudden death overtime periods.

The Dawgs scored midway through the 1st half when Garret Smith dropped a pass to Jaquan Brown for the 1-0 lead. Ressurrection tied it 15 mintues into the second half on an attempted cross that found the upper back post for a tying goal. In the first sudden death period, FC appeared to score and began a celebration as the Resurrection GK misplayed a ball over his head and into the goal before slinging the ball out. The referees said to continue play and failed to recognize the play as a goal. "That was devastating for us. We had fought so hard and earned the win only for it to be overlooked. Many people who were near that goal have said that it crossed the line by a foot or more.

We know we won the game. We know we outplayed them. We put our hearts into it and left everything on the field. We pulled off a miraculous victory only to have it overlooked and unfairly taken away. I'm very proud of our season and how far we came this year." The Dawgs finished at 20-3-2 (6-0) in district play.

DAWGS ADVANCE TO 2nd ROUND

The FC Soccer Dawgs dominated in MHSAA 1st round playoff action Tuesday night, defeating a talented Crystal Springs squad 6-0.  Senior forward Bregan Verdin scored a hat trick and added an assist. Verdin now has 30 goals on the season. The game winner came at the 8th minute after Spencer Romero drilled a shot that deflected off the CS goal keeper and out toward the top of the box where Zachary Nugent hit a left footed shot just under the cross bar. Garrett Smith had a similar shot at the 28th minute, left footed that went upper left in the goal, for a 2-0 lead. Just seconds before the half, Dooby Brown sent in a cross where Ghaleb Saleh connected for the goal. Verdin took over the 2nd half with 3 break away goals, with assists from G.Smith, Brant Mullins, and Dooby Brown.  The Dawgs were oustanding defensively led by Joshua Guice with 11 stops and goalkeeper, Colby Guice with 7 saves. The win moves the Dawgs to 20 wins with only 3 losses and sets up a 2nd round match with Ressurection Catholic School, Saturday at 7 pm, at Gautier High School's new turf surfaced field. The winner would most likley face Sacred Heart in the South State Championship.

Girls Outlook

The Lady Dawgs return a loaded group from a year ago in which they captured yet another district title before losing in the 1st round of playoff action against powerhouse Madison St. Joseph.  The Lady Dawgs will be led by three Seniors, each being 3 time All District Selections.  Kenzie Whitehead was the District 7 Most Valuable Player a year ago after a 14 goal/10 assist season with 3 game winning goals and 3 game winning assists coming in district play.  Senior forward Jaden Long was the District 7 Most Valuable Offensive Player a year ago and has a career mark of 25 goals and 33 assists.  Senior midfielder Chyenne Higgs, the District’s Most Valuable Midfielder last season, has 20 career goals and 11 career assists while playing an important defensive role.  “We feel real good about our senior leadership and their experience that they bring to the team “said Head Coach Jeff Long who has established a record of 80 wins, 20 losses and 9 ties in his 5 years as FC Girl’s coach.

The lady Dawgs also return the District’s Most Valuable Goalkeeper. Sophomore Malaine Moak posted 89 saves and 9 shut outs in her first year of soccer. Backing up Moak in goal will be Junior Sidney Scott, and Sophomore, Aliza Jordan.

The defense will once again be led by the District’s Most Valuable Defensive Player, Sophomore, Elise Mullins who posted 171 steals last season.  She will be joined by Junior defenders Tori Jones and Leigha Romero who have stepped up and are ready to join Mullins on the defensive line. Sophomore, Ana Hutto and 8th grader Brayden Reese Moak will also be playing on the back line for the lady Dawgs.

Joining Whitehead and Higgs in the midfield will be Juniors Tayler Smith and Leeandria Elam who combine for a career 19 goals and 13 assists. Also playing midfield this season will be All District selections, Freshman - Katie Bell Higgs, and Junior-Jamie Dawn Walker. Other who will contributing to the midfield are Junior - Victoria Sittig, Sophomores- Emily Dearing and Kylie Robinson, Freshmen - Madeline Tanner and Ray Lynn Winkler, and 7th grader Ali Bolt.

Joining Long at forward will be All District selection, Freshman- Jenna Long who as an 8th grader last season scored 7 goals and added 5 assists.  8th grader Kaleigh Bolt, will see action at forward and midfield.

“We have a really good chance to have a great season. We have returned a good mix of starters with some younger talent that has improved tremendously. The girls have worked extremely hard preparing for this season and they are excited.”

1/2/3A Region 7/District 7 had West Lincoln join along with mainstays, Loyd Star and Wesson.

Boys Outlook

The Soccer Dawgs who have 94 wins, 10 losses ,6 ties and 5 district titles during Long’s 5 years with the program, are heading into the season without the services of three longtime, valuable players in Zane Davis, Thomas Slagle, and Nathaniel Verdin.

The Dawgs will be led by six seniors with sweeper Brant Mullins headlining the group. Mullins is a 3 time All District selection and last year’s District Most Valuable Defender.  Mullins has played in 80 games netting 5 goals, 11 assists from his defensive role. He had a team high 186 steals last season.  Joining him on the defensive line is All District selections and fellow Seniors, Bronson Smith and Mathew Dier. Joining them to provide defensive help will be Juniors – Trey Tindle, Sean Roe, JaQuan Brown, and Clay Wright. Sophomores Bryson Smith, Quenton Durrell provide defensive depth as well as Fresmen – Colby McMillian.

In the midfield, FC returns the District’s Most Valuable Midfielder in Senior Jex Dela Cruz. Cruz plays with a determination and passion that has earned him the team’s ‘100 % award’ multiple times. Senior - Spencer Romero returns and will play midfield after stepping up last mid-season and becoming a solid fixture. Sophomore - Braden Whitehead returns in the midfield after scoring 4 goals a year ago to go with a team leading 12 assists. Juniors- Braden Tyson and Zach Felton return in the middle.  Sophomore Zach Nugent returns with fellow Sophomore newcomer, Ghaleb Saleh.  Freshmen Ty Wittington and Bryce Wilkinson will provide the midfield with much needed depth.

Putting the ball in the goal takes a special skill and the Dawgs are hoping to find some ‘goal scorers’ after moving some players ‘up top’ to the forward position. Junior Joshua Guice who played on the defensive line last season will be making the switch as will Junior – Jace Watts.  Junior- Garrett Smith moves from the goal to the field and will be counted on to score as will newcomer, Bregan Verdin. The senior will be a ‘utility player’ playing where needed as his athletic ability and quickness will be counted on heavily at various spots on the field.

Finally, in the goal, Sophomore - Colby Guice has earned the starting role and will be backed up by former GK - Garrett Smith, if needed.  Guice filled in for an injured Smith last season and performed very well notching 50 saves and 3 shutouts.

“The boys are searching for an identity. We are solid on the defensive end. We just need to find out who is going to put the ball in the net for us. That may come by committee which isn’t a bad thing. Teams won’t be able to just try and stop one player any more. Hopefully we will have multiple goal scoring threats which would make us complete and a difficult team to beat “said Long.  Long will be assisted by 2nd year Assistant Coach Justin Walsh.

Lady Dawgs (11-4-4) set for

playoffs

The 2015-2016 season has not been easy for the Lady Dawgs. Losing Krislyn Kent and Jourdan

Cummings to graduation, losing two more starters who transferred, losing a key senior defender to an ankle injury, losing your goalkeeper to a broken arm, would send most teams into destruction.,but not these Lady Dawgs.

We will start with Senior midfielder, Kelsie Barron. Despite playing with severe knee pain throughout the season at every practice and every game, she has been the driving force defensivley and offensively (7 goals/6 assists). She leads by example. She has scored huge goals at crucial moments, she has come up with a much needed assist when her team needed it most, she has poured her heart into this team. Her teamamtes love and adore her. She makes them better players and better people. She is the example of what every FC athlete should strive to be.

Want more toughness? Senior defender Morgan Moak has played with a painful dislocated shoulder that needs surgery as soon as this season ends. She has led an inexperienced defense. She has never complained once. She has assisted many goals on corner kicks and free kicks. She hit an upper 90 free kick from 30 yards and her jumping 'heel click' celebration is one to remember.  : )

Senior defender Aryiana Mason has played with a painful hip. An injury that started many months ago but she has played through it and played well. She is only in her second year of soccer and has been a big lift to this team.

Eighth grader Elise Mullins earned a starting position and has started every game of the year and has played outstanding. Freshman Leeandria Elam earned a starting spot mid way through the season and leads the team in goals scored (10).

Junior midfielders Justice Walker(ankle) and Noel Parker (knee) have played in pain. Freshman Tayler Smith has battled a knee injury. These three midfielders along with junior Emily Strittman have combined for 11 goals and 10 assists.

Sophomores Kenzie Whitehead, Chyenne Higgs, and Jaden Long have combined for 22 goals and 17 assists.

The three of them recently played with strep throat in a 2-1 district loss. No excuses here, just stating the facts and praising the toughness and dedication by this team.

After a crash course in goalkeeping,  Junior Geri Weathersby suffered a broken arm that was so severe, it ended her season. Junior Mia Durrell who played GK for the JV squad last year stepped in the goal for her team. Without the much needed preparation, she has been sensational, making 71 saves to go with 7 shutouts. She has faced 4 penalty kicks (on goal) and blocked 4. She wasn't thrilled about havng to play goalkeeper but did it for her team.

The 2015-2016 Lady Dawgs refused to give in, overcoming so many obstacles, playing through the pain, playing for each other.

Some feel that this season was a failure, simply because we didn't win district. We know better. We know what we have overcome. We know the pain that came along the way. We know we became a team. We know we hold a +1 margin over the district champ.  : )   We know we are headed to the playoffs and it will be a tough road. One thing's for sure, this team is tough and have proven themsleves. Way to Go Lady Dawgs !

One year after coaching Clinton to the Class 6A boys soccer state championship and a No. 1 ranking by The Clarion-Ledger, Jeff Long has an undefeated team at Franklin County.

Hoby, a junior center midfielder, has 25 goals and 12 assists and Zayne, a junior forward, has scored 17 goals and assisted on 13.

Long, who also coaches the girls team, is surprised at how fast his new team has adapted to his coaching.

“When we started practicing, they were all ears, buying in 100 percent to what I was teaching,” he said. “They were eager to learn, eager to win. It made my job so much easier.”

Defensively, the Bulldogs are led by senior Brendan Beach, who has been selected for the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Game.

The girls team (13-2-1) is led by sophomore forward Kristlyn Kent (18 goals, nine assists) and senior sweeper Haley Haygood.

Long said coaching both teams has not been very difficult. He gives much of the credit to Stephanie McKormick, his assistant for both.

The Franklin County Bulldogs showcased their soccer skills Tuesday night on King Field, sweeping Brookhaven's girls and boys in a varsity twinbill. Franklin County's unbeaten boys cruised to a 4-1 triumph and the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 3-2 in a close contest.

FCHS 3, Brookhaven 2

Junior forward Siedriq Middleton scored twice for the Lady Bulldogs. Harley McKay scored her team's first goal as FCHS took a 3-1  halftime lead. Middleton also provided an assist.

Macy Zisken worked as FCHS goalkeeper. She saved nine of Brook's 11 shots on goal.

The Lady Bulldogs raised their record to 11-2-1.

"I liked the way we came out and scored in the first minute," said FCHS first-year coach Jeff Long, who coached the Clinton boys for 13 years and won 4 State titles.  "We have tended to be a second-half team this season. It was good to see Si'edriq play well tonight. She has been recovering from a knee sprain and is just now nearing 100%."

The Lady Panthers (5-6) got single goals from Taylor Murray and Elaina Madison, who scored off a corner kick.

Serving as BHS goalkeeper  was Shelby Case.  She was credited with 7 saves.

"It was a close game up until the end," said BHS girls coach Kevin Bower. "We had two shots hit the side netting near the end of the game. It was a lot closer than last time."

Bower was referring to his team's 5-1 loss at Franklin County, Nov. 30.

FCHS 4, Brookhaven 1

Coach Long's Bulldogs remain undefeated in 14 games. Early in the game, Bulldog Matt Brasher launched a long pass from near midfield and Zane Mullins scored on a header. It was the 14th goal of the season for Mullins.

Greg Queen scored FC's second goal on an assist from Kemo Verdin. Brasher scored on an unassisted goal that ricocheted off a Panther defender and found the net.

Brasher provided the next goal on a corner kick. Dequay Allen scored on a header.
